Women's Health
Our Services at Glengarriff Medical Centre
Dr Aisling has a keen interest in all areas of women’s health. The following services are available;
Cervical Smears

Our practice is registered with the cervical check programme which entitles all women between the ages of 25 and 65 to a free cervical smear. You can book your appointment with the doctor or nurse. In order to access the programme you need a valid PPS number, please bring this or your letter from cervical check with you on the day.

Further information on the programme is available here:
Private smear tests are also available

Contraception

We are happy to discuss the various types of contraception available.
Pills

There are numerous oral contraceptives available and we will help you find the one that is best suited to you.
Coil Fitting

Dr Aisling is trained in the fitting of contraceptive coils such as Mirena, Kyleena, Jaydass (hormone containing coils) and copper coils.
You will be advised to make an initial appointment to discuss the best coil for you, the procedure involved and the possible side effects. You will also have an examination at this time which will include taking of swabs. You will then be booked for an appointment to fit the coil which takes approximately 30 minutes.
On the day of fitting we will issue you with a follow-up appointment 6 weeks after fitting the coil.
Implanon

Dr Aisling is trained in the fitting of the implanon implant. The implanon is a small plastic bar containing the hormone progesterone which is released slowly over a 3 year period. It is fitted into the upper arm. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. The implanon should be replaced or removed after 3 years
Contraceptive Injection

Depo-provera is a long acting hormone (progesterone) injection which provides contraception for 12 weeks. It can be repeated every 12 weeks.
Emergency Contraception

We are happy to advise and prescribe emergency contraception. Tablets are available which can be taken up to 3 days (72 hours) post unprotected intercourse. The earlier they are taken the better the chance of success. We also fit copper coils in an emergency up to 5 days post unprotected intercourse.
Further information on your contraceptive options is available here
